Why Markham installs are usually straightforward
Most of Markham was built after 1985, and a great deal of it after 1995. That has three consequences that all work in your favour:
- 200-amp services are the norm rather than the exception, so the load calculation usually passes without drama and a service upgrade is rarely needed.
- Attached garages are near-universal in the subdivisions, which means short cable runs and a clean, one-day install.
- Panels generally have spare breaker positions, so no subpanel and no shuffling of existing circuits.
If you live in Cornell, Wismer, Berczy, Greensborough, Cachet or Angus Glen, your install is most likely the simple version — and you should be quoted accordingly. A high price for a straightforward Markham subdivision install deserves a question.
The exceptions
Unionville's historic core and the older stretches along Main Street are a different matter — genuinely older housing, smaller services, detached garages and laneway parking. Thornhill on the Markham side includes substantial 1960s and 1970s stock. Milliken and the older Markville area sit in between. In these pockets, expect the same careful look we would give an older Toronto home.
The other Markham-specific consideration is stacked new loads. Because so many Markham homes are newer and all-electric-capable, homeowners here more often add a charger, a heat pump and an induction range within a few years of each other. Even a 200-amp service has a limit, and it is worth scoping the whole plan once rather than discovering the ceiling on the third project. Our panel upgrade guide covers how the calculation works.
Your utility and your paperwork
Markham is served by Alectra Utilities, which handles the service application if a service upgrade is needed.
Every install requires a notification of work filed with the Electrical Safety Authority before work begins, and produces an ESA Certificate of Acceptance when it passes. We handle the filing and the certificate comes to you.
On municipal help: Markham has studied a home energy retrofit program jointly with Richmond Hill, but it has not launched, and there is no Markham program that covers EV chargers today. Toronto's property-tax-repaid loan program is City of Toronto only. See ways to pay.

Common questions
My house is from 2004 with a 200-amp panel. Is this just a simple job?
Very probably, and that is what the quote should reflect. The things that would still change it are an unusually long run to the parking spot, a full panel with no spare positions, or a plan to add other large electrical loads soon.
We are thinking about a heat pump too. Does that change the charger install?
It can, and this is the most useful question a Markham homeowner can ask us early. Doing one load calculation that accounts for both is better than two projects that each assume they are the only new load. It occasionally changes the recommendation from "install the charger" to "install the charger with load management" so the heat pump still fits later.
Do you have Farsi-speaking staff?
Yes — we offer service in English and Farsi, and we can match you with a contractor accordingly where possible. We think being able to have a technical conversation in your own language about your own home is worth something.
How quickly can this happen?
Our target is under ten days from first contact to an installed charger for a straightforward job, which describes most Markham installs. A service upgrade extends that because it depends on Alectra's scheduling.
About this page. Oryn coordinates home EV charger installations across the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Niagara and elsewhere in Ontario. The electrical work is performed and certified by independent, ECRA/ESA-licensed electrical contractors — Oryn is not itself an electrical contractor. Prices described here are general market ranges for orientation only, not a quote, and not an offer. Your own price depends on your home and is confirmed in writing before any work starts. The charger installation — the wiring from your panel to the charger, and the charger itself — is quoted as a fixed price. Electrical panel or service work, where it is needed, is quoted separately as an estimate with a stated ceiling that you approve before anything begins.
