What Oryn is
Oryn coordinates home EV charger installations across the Greater Toronto Area. Homeowners come to us — through our own site and through car dealerships that hand them our card when they buy an EV — and we contract directly with the homeowner.
We then subcontract the electrical work to independent, ECRA/ESA-licensed electrical contractors. Oryn holds no electrical contractor licence and does not perform electrical work. You do.
What that means for you, practically
The job arrives scoped
You are not turning up blind. Before a job reaches you it has been through intake: the customer has told us about their panel and their parking, sent photographs of the service panel and the proposed charger location, and we have formed a view on whether the existing service carries the load, whether a load-management device is the better answer, or whether it genuinely needs a service upgrade.
You get the address, the access notes, the customer's name and number, the photographs, the agreed scope and what "finished" looks like — before you accept it. If our scoping is wrong when you get there, you tell us and we re-quote the customer. You are not expected to absorb our mistake.
You are paid by us
This is the part most contractors care about, so we will be blunt about it. The homeowner is our customer, not yours. We collect the money. You invoice us and we pay you on the terms we agree with you in writing before your first job.
You never chase a homeowner for a cheque, never argue about a deposit, and never carry the customer's credit risk.
No lead fees, no bidding, no subscription
We do not sell you leads, run auctions, charge a placement fee, or take a cut of a job you found yourself. The arrangement is straightforward: we agree a price for the work, we send you the work, we pay you.
You keep the licensed work in your name
You file the notification of work with the Electrical Safety Authority and the Certificate of Acceptance issues to you as the licensed contractor. That is how the law requires it to run, and we are not interested in blurring it. We coordinate the job; you perform and certify the electrical work.
We handle the customer
Intake, scoping, quoting, scheduling, reminders, the awkward conversation about why a panel needs upgrading, invoicing, and the follow-up afterwards. If a customer wants to move their appointment or ask what a breaker does, they call us.
What we need from you
Non-negotiable, checked before your first job and tracked for expiry:
- A valid ECRA/ESA electrical contractor licence
- Liability insurance with a certificate we can keep on file
- WSIB coverage or a valid clearance
- Willingness to be named on paper — a written subcontract that says who is responsible for what
And the things that are not paperwork but matter more:
- You turn up when you said you would. Speed and reliability are the entire reason a homeowner picks us over a national platform. If we cannot rely on you, we cannot sell what we are selling.
- You explain things to people without being condescending. Our customers are usually first-time EV owners who do not know what a load calculation is.
- You tell us early when something is wrong. A panel that is not what the photograph suggested is a normal event, not a crisis — as long as we hear about it before the customer does.
- You leave the place clean.
The kind of work
Level 2 home charger installations across the GTA — mostly detached and semi-detached houses and townhomes. Some are a short run inside an attached garage. Some are a long run to a detached garage at the back of the lot. A share need panel or service work, and a share are avoidable with load management rather than a service upgrade.
If you also do panel and service upgrades, say so — that is a meaningful part of this work.
Being honest about where we are
Oryn is a young company and we would rather you hear that from us than work it out. We are building this deliberately: a small number of contractors we actually trust, rather than a large roster we cannot vouch for. We are not going to promise you a volume of work we cannot guarantee, and you should be sceptical of anyone who does.
What we will commit to is this: when we have a job in your area that fits what you do, it goes to you with everything you need to do it, and you get paid on the terms we agreed.
Common questions
Do I need my own insurance if Oryn is insured?
Yes. You are an independent contractor running your own business, and your policy covers your work. Ours sits behind the arrangement as a whole. We will ask for a certificate and we will ask again when it is close to expiring — a lapsed certificate is the one thing that will stop us sending you work.
Am I working exclusively for Oryn?
No. You run your own business and take your own jobs. We are not asking for exclusivity and we are not asking you to turn down work.
Who is liable if something goes wrong?
We contract with the homeowner, so the homeowner comes to us. You are responsible for your own electrical work under the subcontract. The specifics are in the agreement and we will walk you through it rather than emailing you twenty pages and hoping.
Do I have to use a portal or an app?
No. Jobs come to you as a single message with everything in it. If we ever build something more, it will be because contractors asked for it, not because we wanted a dashboard.
What if I only cover part of the GTA?
Tell us which part. We would rather send you three jobs in your own area than ten across the region that you will decline.
About this page. Oryn coordinates home EV charger installations across the Greater Toronto Area, Hamilton, Niagara and elsewhere in Ontario. The electrical work is performed and certified by independent, ECRA/ESA-licensed electrical contractors — Oryn is not itself an electrical contractor. Prices described here are general market ranges for orientation only, not a quote, and not an offer. Your own price depends on your home and is confirmed in writing before any work starts. The charger installation — the wiring from your panel to the charger, and the charger itself — is quoted as a fixed price. Electrical panel or service work, where it is needed, is quoted separately as an estimate with a stated ceiling that you approve before anything begins.
